It is not often that you find talented youths who want to use their abilities to make a difference in the world. There are times when artists can become so caught up in the journey to fame and fortune that they forget what is important to them. However, this is not the case for this singer and songwriter who strayed from that beaten path. Kaitlyn (Kaity) Meagher wants to help raise awareness for autism. Around five months ago, Kaity recorded her song, “Until All the Pieces Fit,” which has received much positive regard since its debut. She created this song in order to raise awareness for those on the spectrum. In sharing the song, she hopes that it will give a voice to the many who are affected by autism. The people she wants to recognize are not only those who are diagnosed with autism, but also the friends, families, caregivers and teachers of those who support people with autism. Her beautiful lyrics wish to inspire everyone around the world.

Chorus:
One day, the world will understand it
Till then, don’t change a thing you do
Don’t you know just how bright you shine?
Someday, we will have the answers
For now, gotta show ‘em what you’re made of
With you by my side, we will never quit
Until all the pieces fit.

In five months the song has received much attention with over 29,000 views on YouTube and is also available for purchase on iTunes. Although with all this positive attention, it may appear that Kaity’s career is aimed towards the musical career track, but singing and composing actually come second to education for Kaity.

Currently studying at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, Kaity is working towards her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Special Education for Elementary Education. In addition to singing and songwriting, Kaity is highly involved in her college from being a campus tour guide to her key role as founder of the Autism Speaks University chapter at Marist College that began just in this past year. Kaity also interns two days per week in a classroom full of students who are on the autism spectrum at the Anderson Center for Autism. Kaity does not stop after the school year ends, because she is also a camp counselor at Coleman Country Day Camp. It is at this camp that Kaity found her motivation and drive to really make a difference for children with autism. While working at this camp, Kaity found her muse in an adorable little boy named Ryan.

Autism is a cause that must be recognized. According to the National Autistic Society, 1 in 100 children in the United Kingdom are diagnosed with autism. Autism Speaks illustrates that 1 in 68 are on the spectrum in the United States. Kaity’s ultimate goal is to help those with autism and to raise awareness for the growing population of people who are on the autism spectrum. Although awareness is increasing through efforts from people such as Kaity and organisations including Autism Speaks and the National Autistic Society, there is a fundamental need for care for those on the spectrum. If proper care is not taken, children with autism may suffer extreme hardships not only in school but throughout their lives.

Children with autism are not to be ignored, and with people out there like Kaity they are more likely to receive the help and support that they need.
