Second Wave is a youth community organisation led by the creative intelligence of young people. Based in Deptford, in the heart of the community, Second Wave offers a year round programme of creative activities for 11-24 year olds.
We provide a safe place for young people to meet and participate in weekly workshops in drama, lyrics, singing creative writing and accredited leadership training. Our workshops offer peer support and one-to-one mentoring.
We regularly produce new plays scripted and devised by the young writers, actors and musicians. These reflect current themes and issues for young people. Our youth led platforms and symposiums events promote young people's knowledge, skills and potential, share their creative work with the wider community, and build bridges for social cohesion.
In our outreach projects, we work closely with the community safety team and a range of partner organisations to support young people in a challenging urban environment, enabling them to reach their full potential. Our outreach activities with schools, colleges and community organisations strengthen the process of inter-generational learning and promote their commitment as well informed community activists- seeking in influence local decision- making.
A registered charity, founded by a group of local women in 1982, Second Wave is based in the Deptford Mission Building and run by a dedicated bond of Trustees. Young volunteers are encouraged to participate in social action projects and to become constitutional members of Second Wave. We offer paid traineeships and accreditation to local young people who train alongside experience professionals and develop their skills in workshop facilitation, community engagement and networking.
