Hatty Keane: Earthshakes and Troublemakers
Hatty Keane is making a name for herself as one of the hardest working performers in the music industry. At only 18-years-old, she has already played over 350 gigs, with her EARTHSHAKES tour taking her to locations ranging from England to Russia. Hatty has supported huge acts such as Mika, Olly Murs and Wretch 32 and recently played to over 20’000 kids in two weeks for her INSPIRE THE KIDS tour. Currently set to play shows in Australia, New Zealand and Brazil, Hatty didn’t mind me interrupting her holiday to answer a few questions about her career and any advice she could pass on to those looking to follow in her footsteps.
Hi Hatty. So how would you describe your music?
It’s a massive sound, dark and energetic.
How old were you when you first started singing? Were you involved in any musical activities at school?
About twelve. I was always too shy to sing in front of people, until I realised I would get nowhere being shy, so I did school musicals and talent shows to build my confidence.
When you were 16, you entered the UK Open Mic competition, outlasting 9000 other acts to win the under-18s category. How did you find out about the competition?
I just googled singing competitions after I did a talent show at school and I felt like I needed to get out there and do something!
What did it feel like performing in front of 2000 people, compared to performing at your school’s All Hallows Got Talent contest?
It was a massive buzz but scary at the time!
What song did you sing when you auditioned for it?
I sang Use Somebody by Kings of Leon.
You’ve played with some massive names, like Pitbull and Ed Sheeran, among others. What would you say has been your biggest gig so far?
Those gigs were massive for me but to me the best feeling was when I played at Ministry of Sound and the whole crowd went mental to the songs I had written.
So of all the venues you’ve played across Europe, you’d say that Ministry of Sound is your favourite?
Yeah, definitely, Ministry of Sound in London. When I played there, it was like I knew I was ready and I was going in the right direction.
Do you prefer performing more up tempo songs, like “Best Kept Secret”, or slower, anthemic songs like Heartfail?
Uptempo wins every time, I need energy when I’m on stage, I love performing ballads too though!
Which artist would say has inspired you the most, and who would you most like to collaborate with?
Rihanna has probably been my biggest inspiration, when I was younger she was all I listened to because we have a similar vocal range and I found her songs easy to sing. The artist I’d love to collaborate with the most would probably be Labrinth.
Where do you hope to be in five years time?
Selling out arena tours!
And What advice can you offer younger singers?
To work hard, get yourself out there, find who you are and find your own sound in doing that and just keeping pushing forward until people listen!
