“I like to believe in magic. I feel like there’s magic in everything.”- Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa, a London-born singer-songwriter, is set to become the music industry’s next obsession. The 20 year old was born to Albanian parents and grew up around the musical influences of David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and Nelly Furtado. As a child, Lipa attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School until 13 when her father’s job moved her back to Kosovo. However, she only lasted two years before convincing her parents to let her move back to the UK to pursue her music career. At 15, Lipa was living and working with friends in clubs in London to make ends meet until she was scouted to be a model. Her contract with Next Management was short-lived and abruptly ended when she was asked to lose weight. “I did it [modelling] so I could meet people in music,” says Lipa. “Then they told me to lose weight and I was like, Ha! F**k no. I love eating too much.”

Lipa’s music career began through connections that came from her original songs on SoundCloud in 2012. Her original tracks caught the attention Lana Del Rey’s managers who singed her and set her up to work with producer Emile Haynie. Though Lipa describes her music as “dark pop”, she’s hardly goth. Her distinctive sound and style has been described as “elegant, trendy electro tunes with ear-snagging choruses and emotionally resonant lyrics”. She’s a younger, more upbeat Lana Del Rey with “an off-kilter, it-girl sound that’s a world away from the thinly auto-tuned sound of most radio-bound pop.”

Lipa will be going back to her roots as her first tour will be centred around the UK cities of London, Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham, and Huntington as well as including a spot on Glastonbury’s iconic lineup.
