The National Youth Dance Company (NYDC), hosted by Sadler’s Wells Theatre, is set to be announcing the dates for their Experience Workshops in early Spring. Each year, NYDC searches for thirty new dancers to join the company through a series of workshops. Experience Workshops are for anyone between the ages of 16 and 18 from diverse backgrounds with experience in any dance style. Dancers also must not be currently enrolled in a full time vocational dance course. Experience Workshops occur across the country and will be featured in the following cities: London, Liverpool, Hull, Brighton, Plymouth, Swindon, Ipswich, Eastleigh, Nottingham, Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham, and Manchester.

Each workshop covers more than just the student’s dance ability; in addition to a technique class, the day will involve creative tasks and discussions on dance training, careers, and NYDC. Workshops are free of cost, but placements must be pre-booked when the workshop dates are announced. From the workshops, selected dancers will be invited to Sadler’s Wells in the summer to take part in an additional workshop where the final selection will take place.

NYDC prides itself on granting dancers “the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the professional dance world at a critical moment in their development, before they make the commitment to enter full-time training or choose dance as a career.” Likewise, NYDC is committed to making their company as diverse and inclusive as possible by welcoming dancers from every social background, dance style, and level of experience. Members of NYDC will, among other activities, tour and perform in world class venues, learn, create, and perform original work, collaborate with professional choreographers, and learn about career pathways and opportunities.

Former NYDC member Annie reflects upon her experience with the company in saying that “NYDC helped massively in terms of my future as a dancer…my time with NYDC helped me mentally, giving me the confidence in my own ability to audition and be part of a professional show.”

To get a better taste of the work put on by NYDC, the current 2015/2016 company will be premiering their newest piece, In-Nocentes, on April 7th at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Set to Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”, In-Nocentes features the work of the critically acclaimed Michael Keegan-Dolan and exists with the intention of showcasing the art and act of transformation through dance.
