Tell us what you do for a living?
I'm a writer
Can you describe what that involves?
It involves writing comedy sketches, plays and shows.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy making things up. I also like not having a boss and being able to take tea breaks when I choose.
Is there anything you do not enjoy?
Hearing the endless stream of drivel that comes out of my writing partner, Ian’s, careless mouth.
Can you describe what a day in your job might be?
I’ll read the papers, if I’m writing for anything that requires me to be topical, and then write jokes. Occasionally I’ll have to go to an office to do this, but that’s rare. Otherwise I get on with commissioned shows or one of my own projects (at the moment that’s a radio play)
What hours do you work?
As required. I start late and finish as early as possible.
How much do you earn or what is your salary?
It’s a ridiculous figure.
How long have you been working in this area?
5 years.
Can you tell us how you got to where you are?
I’ve basically slept my way to the middle. That’s what’s really mattered when push has come to shove. I always have ideas and write even when I don’t have a commission. I started by sending sketches on spec to a show on BBC Radio.
Can you tell us about your education to date?
I have a degree, but I can’t say it was any real help.
Can you tell us about any training you have sought/received?
I would if I had, but I haven’t.
Have you learnt any new skills whilst doing this job? If yes, please tell us what they are.
Boxing - to relieve the day’s tension - and I’ve got a lot faster at typing.
Did you come across any problems getting this job?
Initially it was getting people to read what I wrote.
Looking back, would you choose the same job again? If no, what would you choose if you could start again?
Yes. I’m still doing it, I love it and I could, if I wanted do something else.
Thinking about your personal experience, what advice would you give to someone hoping to follow a similar career path?
I would encourage them not to do it, because I see all competition as destructive.
Do you have an aspiration/goal for your future career?
I would like to be in control of all my projects and be able to pick and choose what I do.
How will you try and get there?
Perseverance.
How long do you think it will take you?
About three months. Maybe not. I’m on the cusp.
